With its fanbase threatening to recede, the Kochi IPL franchise may go for a new name in place of the muchmaligned 'Indi Commandos.'
Apparently, the displeasure of the fans has forced the beleaguered team management to rethink. Confirming the development, coowner and the only Malayali face in the consortium of partners, Vivek Venugopal, told Express on Saturday that the team was planning to run a contest in the next few days to find a name which will be acceptable to the fans in Kerala.
"Yes, we are planning to change the name," Vivek said. "Now that things are becoming clearer, we will adopt a name which is acceptable to fans. We will run a contest to select the name."
Clarifying that the management always wanted to play in Kerala, he said, "Since there were uncertainties on a few issues, like the completion of the renovation work at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the Kerala High Court order regarding the new stadium at Edakochi and the entertainment tax, we simply explored some other options. Now the election date (April 13) too is out and we are glad that there is no clash with our matches."
Earlier in the day, MP and avid cricket enthusiast Shashi Tharoor had tweeted that he was convinced that the management was seriously considering renaming the Kochi IPL team, among other changes.
"As a Kerala MP cricket wellwisher, had a frank talk with owners of IPL team. Convinced serious changes are coming, including of name," Tharoor wrote on his twitter account.
Ever since Kochi Cricket Private Limited announced last month, via the same medium, their IPL team's name as Indi Commandos Kerala, fans had poured out their anger and disappointment over the choice of name and logo in cyberspace. A few days back, even the tag 'Kerala' was struck off, leading to further resentment.
